What is Fingerprint Dust?
White powder is used to dust prints on dark surfaces, and dark powder is used if the print is left on light colored surfaces. Officials use either talcum-based powders for white, or graphite-based powders for black. Police can also use special fluorescent powders that glow under black light if the prints are on multi-colored or multi-textured surfaces.

The process of dusting for fingerprints involves various methods intended to get the particles of the powder to stick to residue left by skin ridges on the fingers, palms, or feet. Law enforcement teams are able to gain a better understanding of a crime scene or a perpetrator and his or her actions by performing this dusting. Most importantly, finding fingerprints can place a specific person or people at the crime scene.
When a person touches something, the slight friction between the fingers and the object or surface can leave behind a mark from the natural oils in the skin. Some parts of the skin don’t have these natural oils, making it more challenging to get a print. This is where dusting becomes useful in crime investigations.
